Special Care for Titanium Cleaning

Precision cleaning of titanium parts used in medical, aerospace, and other applications requires special care. Titanium degrades from exposure to chlorinated solvents making freon or similar agents inappropriate for cleaning. Instead, carefully selected alkaline solvents and/or alcohol can achieve the desired cleanliness levels. It takes experience when using permitted agents: alkaline can leave permanent stains on matte titanium finishes; trapped moisture can be a disaster in outer space as it freezes and causes a blockage; alcohol left behind can ignite; and so on. That's why it is imperative that titanium cleaning be left to the experts.

NTS has cleaned more aerospace tanks than any other contract cleaning company. Satellite fuel tanks, typically containing some type of hypergolic fuel provide around five years of life in orbit. The tanks are a tough proving ground for a precision cleaning contractor, since many have complex propellant management devices (PMDs) that can trap large amounts of particulates and moisture. Left over particulates will clog the small rocket nozzles that keep the vehicle correctly positioned in orbit.
