Internet Telephony enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls. For users who have free or fixed-price Internet access, Internet telephony software essentially provides free telephone calls anywhere in the world. However, until recently Internet telephony did not offer the same quality of telephone service as direct telephone connections. VoIP (Voice over IP) and Voice over Internet (VoI) are just alternate ways of referring to Internet Telephony. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), on the other hand, is an encompassing protocol which allows sessions between multiple users for Internet telephony, multimedia distribution, etc. SIP, in effect, allows for a wide-range of more complex features than typically supported by traditional PSTN (public switched telephone network) – your normal telephone.
NTS typically conducts compatibility and functionality testing to verify that the product under test functions correctly without anomalies, difficulties or discrepancies. During testing, NTS typically verifies voice/video quality, H.323 standard compliance, and SS7 protocol integrity. Testing includes:
Voice/Video Quality - PSQM, PSQM+, MOS, Path Verification, Jitter, Echo Cancellation, Stress/Stability, Packet Loss, Latency, and Throughput, and Frame Rate using industry standard test tools like Ixia IxChariot
H.323 Compliance - Gateway-Gateway (Call Control, Media Formatting, and TCP/IP Functionality) and Gateway-Gatekeeper (Addressing, Authorization, Authentication, Bandwidth Management, and Billing)
SS7 Integrity - Physical Layer, Message Transfer Part - Level 2, Message Transfer Part - Level 3, Signaling Connection Control Part, Global Title Translation, Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP), and Operations, Maintenance, and Administration Part (OMAP)
If you're interested in VoIP/SIP testing, you may also be interested in other certifications, such as Calix or DSL testing.
